Since medieval times, Sherwood Forest has been a top destination for people who want to experience the outdoor life and indulge in adventurous pursuits. RUFFORD PARK GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

Set in 200 acres of woodland and parkland of the old Rufford Abbey deer park, the 6300-yard, par-70 golf course is open to the public and players of all abilities. In addition to the course there is a 16-bay floodlit driving range. A round of golf can be booked up to one month in advance for less than 10 players.

GO APE!

Get a bird’s eye view of the forest by ‘Going Ape’ at Sherwood Pines Forest Park. This award-winning adventure course allows you to swing like Tarzan between the trees, cross rope bridges and whizz along zip slides. Every participant undergoes a full safety briefing and is fitted with a harness. The course takes between 21⁄2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on the number of people in the trees. Anyone over 10 can be admitted, although under 18s need to be accompanied by an adult.

SHERWOOD FOREST FARM PARK FISHERY

This fishery located at the farm park has five lakes (185 pegs) situated along the River Maun in an area of Sherwood Forest. It is suitable for all abilities and welcomes visitors.

AMEN CORNER KARTING

This karting centre in Rufford has a 330m junior circuit which is ideal for novices and a 550m Prokart circuit which is a demanding course with plenty of challenges. The centre offers ‘arrive and drive’ sessions, so that customers can turn up on the day, however, if you are interested in the Prokart circuit, it might be best to book in advance. The minimum entry age is 7 years.

LOCKWELL HILL ACTIVITY CENTRE

Based on a 60-acre site, this family-run activity centre claims to have the largest fleet of adult and junior quad bikes and dirt buggies in the area. There are also many other adventurous pursuits on offer including 4×4 driving, archery, and rifle shooting. Activities can be tailored to customers’ needs and although advisable, booking is not always required. The minimum entry age is 6 years.

ADRENALIN JUNGLE

The Adrenalin Jungle is the largest outdoor activity centre in the East Midlands, spread over a 150-acre site in Sherwood Forest. It offers a variety of adventurous activities – paintballing, quad biking, an assault course, off-road karting, archery, 4×4 driving and clay pigeon shooting, and for the very brave, ‘blindfold driving’. All these activities are purchased directly from the company, which they state, “cuts out the middleman”.
