Edwinstowe
Edwinstowe, Robin Hood’s village, is steeped in legend and history. Here, at St Mary’s Church, whose origins date from the 7th century, Robin Hood is said to have married Maid Marian. St Mary’s is a wonderful church – a building where history and the odd mystery combine. The village itself, though picturesque, is still very much an active community, boasting a variety of excellent shops. Like many Nottinghamshire villages, part of Edwinstowe has connections with its colliery. Thoresby is one of the three remaining working coal mines in Nottinghamshire and is particularly famous for its award-winning brass band.
Above all, however, Edwinstowe should and always will be connected with Robin Hood. The Major Oak, the visitor centre, and the surrounding forest, remind us that Robin Hood was an English hero whose name brings visitors from all over the world to the area to see the origins of the legend. The Major Oak’s deceptive outer trunk has a hollow interior said to be able to hide over ten men! The site around the Major Oak is of special scientific interest and is so precious that it has now become a National Nature Reserve.
Early August sees the Robin Hood Festival, with numerous activities and tales of Robin Hood. You will always find a cast of visiting medieval characters, who are certain to amuse.
Edwinstowe is a medium-sized village with an impressive past and an interesting present and is well worth a visit.
